The Analysis of Words in Stories in Teacher’s Guidebooks of Nuri Curriculum in South Korea

    Abstract

    The purpose of this study is to analyze the frequency and level of vocabularies in fairy tales in teaching guidebooks of Nuri curriculum for 5 years old in South Korea and offer the implication for vocabulary’s appropriateness and vocabulary education for young children. For this research, 58 flash fairy tales in teaching guidebooks of Nuri curriculum for 5 years old in South Korea were analyzed through corpus analysis. The research method based on corpus is KKMA (Kind Korean Morpheme Analyzer). KKMA is a tool for using corpus on the basis of relational database and an analysis of words. As a result, first, it is found that there are 9,153 words in 58 flash fairy tales in teaching guidebooks of Nuri curriculum for 5 years old. The ranges of vocabulary’s frequency are wide from 1 to 112. Second, the level of words in flash fairy tales principally presents 1st level’s words like ‘I’, ‘mother’, ‘people’, ‘uncle’, ‘princess’, etc. The rest vocabularies like ‘animal’, ‘dinosaur’, ‘fart’, ‘woodcutter’ belong to 2nd level’s words. 1st level’s words, basic vocabularies, imply children can apply the vocabularies for daily routine. This study would suggest comprehension for young children’s vocabularies and basic data for related researches.
